The fa-diab List Charter
Basic Info About the fa-diab List
Failure to follow the rules contained in this document may get you
removed from the list. PLEASE READ THIS DOCUMENT THOROUGHLY!
Fa-diab is Fat-Acceptance list for diabetics who don't believe
in intentional weight loss. It is created as an area where fat
diabetics can discuss their disease without fear of the "lose weight
or die" attitude of some diabetics and medical practitioners and that
is common in other online support areas.
Note: DIETING and other INTENTIONAL WEIGHT LOSS topics are NOT
tolerated on this list.
Welcome participants are diabetics, hypoglycemics, family members of
diabetics, friends of diabetics, diabetic professionals, folks
concerned about diabetics etc. who are also Fat-Accepting. Age,
gender, size, etc. are of no concern.
At this time, list subscription is open, meaning anyone can subscribe
and unsubcribe at will. If we have problems this will probably
change.
PLEASE UNDERSTAND: there is a difference between being a fat diabetic
and a fat-accepting diabetic. If you think diets are good or that you
must lose weight, this is not a list you should be subscribed to.
What IS allowed on this list
Discussions about diabetes concerns, including, but not restricted to:
- healthy eating
- exercising
- medication concerns
- complication concerns
In general, disagreements are a welcome part of discussions as long as
they don't reduce to name-calling and other childish behaviours. Even
if you're not a legal adult, please act like one :-).
What IS NOT allowed on this list
- Fat Bigotry. This generally includes weight loss discussions. If
you feel that diabetics "must" lose weight this list is not for you.
If you are looking for help losing weight, you should try another
list.
- Dieting talk. Not all diets are about weight loss. You can live
as a diabetic without drastically changing your diet. You don't have
to give up sugar, or carbos, or fat. You are welcome to talk about how
a certain food or types of food may cause more problems than others.
- "Diabetes Bigotry" [ie. "my kind of diabetes is more serious than
your type kind"]. Everyone's diabetes is serious and everyone's
diabetes is different. Please respect this.
- Any posts about problems with Nutrasweet ("Equal"). I'm sure you mean
well, but this is a very hotly contested topic. Please keep this
OFF the list.
- Spam and snake oil cures. "If it's too good to be true..." This includes
"make money fast", dying cancer kids, and "quick cures" for diabetes.
- Commercial posts. If you want to sell your personal meter, that's fine.
If you are a meter seller by trade, please do not post here.
Caveats/Disclaimers
- Although there are over 150 people on this list, traffic is bursty.
There are times when there are no postings for a week or more!
Feel free to start a new discussion if things have been quiet.
- Unless someone specifically says differently, it is to be assumed that
someone is not a medical professional.
- All medical advice, even that posted by medical professionals, should
be discussed with -your- doctor(s) and/or diabetic care team.
- Common sense is the Golden Rule. If something doesn't seem right to
you, maybe there's a good reason. I am not responsible for anything
that happens to you if you take someone's advice. Don't expect
someone else on this list [or me!] to be your mommy. If you can't
think for yourself, please go stare at your TV or something.
Anything in this file is up for discussion on the list for modification.
Final decision is up to the list owner.
Sorry to be blunt, but I want things up front. I really hope the list is
informative and helpful to all who join.
